The summer of 2021 in southern Puglia was characterized by numerous fires that destroyed hectares of olive groves affected and dried up by xylella fastidiosa. In many cases it is suspected that the fires were started by the farmers themselves to clear the soil of the now dried trunks, rather than explanting them at a high cost.
