Palm Sunday: Jesus sits astride cloaks laid by his disciples on his humble mount, a donkey or ass, as he rides into Jerusalem to acclaim from his supporters. Detail of Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem sculpted circa 1190 AD by Master of San Juan de la Peña or Master of Aguero on Romanesque stone cloister capital at Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña in Huesca, Aragon, Spain.
Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña, near Jaca, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain: Jesus Christ sits astride the cloaks of his disciples, laid over the back of his humble mount, a donkey or ass, as he makes a gesture of blessing while riding into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, welcomed and cheered by his supporters. This detail of a Romanesque stone capital, sculpted in about 1190 AD, illustrates the New Testament Gospel accounts of the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem at the start of the Holy Week or Passion Week that would culminate in Christ’s arrest, crucifixion and entombment, followed by his resurrection on Easter Sunday. The artwork is on one of the 20 capitals in the monastery cloister carved by an artist known as the Master of San Juan de la Peña or Master of Agüero. They portray biblical stories from the Creation to Christ’s Ascension and when viewed together, were intended to symbolise a New Jerusalem. The Benedictine monastery was founded under a bulging rock overhang in the Central Pyrenees by hermit monks fleeing the 10th century expansion in the Moorish occupation of Spain. It stands on the Camino de Santiago or Way of St James Christian pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.
