All tumors are liable to occur in connection with the nervous tissue ;but two are peculiar to it, the Neuroma, and Painful tubercle. Neuroma.—This is a simple tumor, and, like the painful tubercle, is of thenature of fibro-cartilage ; consisting ofdense plastic matter lodged amongst thefibrils of the nervous tissue, which arethereby separated, and usually renderedthe seat of perverted sensation. Some-times, the formation occurs spontane-ously ; more frequently, it follows re-motely on wound, or other external in-jury. It may take place in the courseof an undivided nerve; more frequently,it forms on the truncated extremity, afterdivision. When in the former situationit usually arises without any appreci-able cause ; is of an oval shape; ^nd may attain to the size of a pruneor small egg. Above and below the enlarged part, the nerve resumesits wonted form and Section of a neuroma; three nervoustrunks terminating in it. The fibrous ar-rangement shown, as observed by the nakedeye.—Smith.
