It is easil\- daniaseci by frost and should not be planted until danger of frost is past in the spring. It fits in well as a svniimer crop following spring vegetables. This vegetable is increasing rapidly in importance both for fresh market and tor processing. It grows well on a wide range of soil tj-pes. but produces best on soils of medium fertility with pH of On soils of high fertility levels excessive vine growth, with sparse tlower and pod development results. Fertilize with 400 lbs. of 5-10-5 in rows prior to planting. Seed should be drilled 1':: to 2 inches in depth in rows 3'; feet apart. Three-fourths of a pound of seed will plant 100 ft. of row; 100 lbs. of seed to plant one acre. 559 Black Eye, Princess Anne This new variety was selected from a cross be- tween a bunch Purple Hull and California No. 5 Blackeye. Plants are compact with no basal runners. Flowering stalks are erect and fairly long, bunching a high proportion of the pods at the top of the plant. It is 7-9 days earlier maturing than Large Blackeye.
