Gen. Norton A. Schwartz August 12, 2008 – August 10, 2012 General Norton A. Schwartz was confirmed as the nineteenth Chief of Staff at a time of intense operational activity and organizational change. In addition to sustaining ongoing missions in Afghanistan and Iraq, under his leadership the Air Force met emerging challenges such as Operation ODYSSEY DAWN, the combat operation over Libya; and Operation TOMODACHI, the humanitarian assistance mission in the wake of the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami. Early in his tenure, General Schwartz launched the reinvigoration of the nuclear enterprise, establishing Air Force Global Strike Command, and also transformed cyberspace capabilities as a new Numbered Air Force. General Schwartz made modernization of air and space inventories a priority, leading source selection of the next aerial refueling tanker, the KC-46A and advancing and international acquisition of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Other major actions include creating a Remotely Piloted Aircraft career path; revitalizing the Strategic Basing Process; reorganizing Air Force Materiel Command; and developing Air-Sea Battle, an inter-service initiative to ensure 21st century power projection. In partnership with his wife, Suzie, General Schwartz also championed an array of family and Wounded Warrior programs. A native of Toms River, , General Schwartz graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1973 and later earned a master’s degree from Central Michigan University and attended the National War College. A command pilot with more than 4,400 flying hours, General Schwartz participated in the 1975 airlift evacuation of Saigon. In 1991, he was Chief of Staff of a Joint Special Operations Task Force during Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM. After tours as a C-130E/H and MC-130E aircraft commander and flight examiner, General Schwartz served in a variety of staff positions.
