Artificial retinas. Close-up of prototype electrochemical sensors designed for use as artificial retinas. These retinas contain a semiconductor film made from diamonds. Diamonds are used as they are the only known inert material that is also a semiconductor, and it is this property that makes them suitable for use in and around biological systems. Photographed at the ESIEE (Ecole Superieure d'Ingenieurs en Electronique et Electrotechnique), Noisy-le-Grand, Paris, France.
