The form of head-stock just described probably suggested that generally known as the cylinder head-stock. This was invented simultaneously, we believe, by M. Collas, of Paris, and Mr. Joseph Clement,of London. The arrangement now usually adopted is shown in section in Fig. 3458. The head-stockis bored out true and an iron or steel cylinder ground therein so as to insure an accurate fit; this re-ceives a forward and backward motion from a screw which is rendered endless by means of a collar or 3458.
