Bornite mineral. Bornite (copper iron sulphide, Cu5FeS4) is a mineral ore and is an important source of copper, a metal used in alloys and for electrical wiring. Bornite is a colourful ornamental mineral, also called peacock ore or peacock copper. The colours are caused by a thin layer of copper oxides, formed upon exposure to air. Because the layers are very thin, they scatter light to produce the shimmering sheen that gives the ore its common name.
