Double-banded sandgrouse male (Pterocles bicinctus). This largely sedentary, ground-foraging bird is found in southern Africa. It inhabits dry bushland areas, giving a loud chuck-chuck cry when flushed from cover. It feeds on seeds, mainly in the early morning and late afternoon and during moonlit nights. Large sociable flocks form around water at dusk to drink. Photographed in the Kruger National Park, South Africa.
