The old pit changing room and showers at Rochessadoule near the town of Bessèges in the Gard region of France.

Rochessadoule is an old mining village in the Cévennes region of France. A number of building and structures connected to mining survive around the village. The bath house, pictured here, is sited alongside the former railway track. The external structure of the old bath house is still in good condition. Inside can be seen the shower area and the remains of where the miners changed and put their clothes into wire panniers. These were then hoisted up to the ceiling on pulleys. This was not only a security measure but also kept vermin out of their clothes. Each miner had his own basket with a number tag, thus keeping a track of who was down the mine and who not. A fully restored and much larger version of this building can be seen at “La Maison du Mineur”, a mining museum at the nearby La Grand’ Comb
