Volcanic seismology. Seismogram of earth movements associated with the Soufriere Hills volcano. This volcano is on Montserrat Island, which lies in the Caribbean Sea. Soufriere Hills began erupting in July 1995, its first recorded eruption. Since then it has been nearly continually active, ejecting material and causing earthquakes. In the autumn of 1997, much of the island's populace was evacuated when a major eruption was predicted. Several towns were destroyed by volcanic activity in the weeks that followed. This seismogram records activity on 20 March 2000. Photographed at Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO).
