Gilded and Tiled Domes of Cathedral of the Sign on Varvarka (Moscow)


The five-domed cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” (Znamensky Sobor was constructed on Ulitsa Varvarka (St. Barbara Street) was built between 1675 and 1684 by peasant serfs from Kostroma. It is located in one of Moscow oldest districts Kitai-Gorod, not far from St. Basil’s cathedral and Red Square. The cover for the gilded dome in the center was made of leaf-gold, the hand-forged method used for dome gilding, but covers for four domes in the corners of the church featured with beautiful multicolored glazed tiles in a shape of tree leaves.
