The firm had been going after this business for agoodly number of years, and after the first few sea-sons they were surprised to find the little net profitthat appeared to be shown for the energies devotedto this business. There was plenty of profit, butin one way and another the profit seemed to be eatenup in small difficulties and breakages. After considering this matter, they decided thatif it was to be made profitable it must be handled ina systematic fashion, and the services rendered bethe service actually required by this kind of Putting a Salesman on the Delivery First of all they considered the import-ant matter to be that of the driver of thedelivery that served these resorts. Thedriver had to be a representative of thestore and more than a delivery boy. Hiswork took on something of the nature ofthe traveling salesman. He visited thedifferent homes one day and took ordersfor their requirements, and the next daydelivered them, and took further made probably 50 to 60 calls. Someof them of course represented only smallitems that in the ordinary course ofthings would not have been worth thetrouble, but in the main the orders werefor substantial lists of supplies, and inthis way the delivery rig left each daywith a ful-1 load that showed a substantialbusiness. The business must be good, orit would not pay, for the trip would meanthe covering of about ten miles of road,and with the delivei-y leaving at 9 would be about three in the afternoonbefore it was back at t
