The Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. Italian: Basilica Papale di San Paolo fuori le Mura. Commonly known as Saint Paul's Outside the Walls, is one of Rome's four ancient, papal, major basilicas, along with the basilicas of Saint John in the Lateran, Saint Peter's, and Saint Mary Major. The basilica is famous for the portraits of every pope in a frieze above the columns. Previous to the 1823 fire, these were painted, now they're mosaics.
