Hewas admitted to the Second OfficersTraining Camp at Fort Sheridan and as-signed to the First Company. Upon re-ceiving his commission, Lieutenant Jone.«was ordered overseas, sailing in January,1918, as a casual officer. After receivingfurther instruction at Chattilon-sur-Seine,France, in machine gun v^^ork and minortactics, he was assigned to the FifteenthCompany of the Sixth Machine Gun Bat-talion, Second Division, later being trans-ferred to the Twenty-third Company ofthe same outfit. He served throughoutthe heavy fighting during the Second Bat-tle of the Marne and met instant deathfrom machine gun fire during the Cha-teau Thierry-Soissons engagement onJuly 19, 1918.
