A bottle of Chateau Kefraya wine from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. Historians estimate wine production started in the Bekaa Valley around 5000 years ago. the Bekaa Valley's wine industry has long been at the mercy of feuds and rioting armies. Production dwindled to a trickle during Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, when grapes were swapped for the more lucrative war-time crops of cannabis and opium. But the Bekaa Valley’s wine industry is now back and better than ever. More than 30 vineyards have opened since the mid 90’s, after the Syrian army – prodded by the government - ploughed under most of the valley’s illicit crops.
