Extrasolar planet. Artist's impression of the planet 47 Ursae Majoris B, evidence for which was discovered by Geoffrey Marcy and Paul Butler in late 1995. At upper right is the parent star, 47 Ursae Majoris (SAO 43557), a G1-type star similar to the Sun. The planet is estimated to be about times the mass of Jupiter. Its orbit takes 1103 days, which would place it between Mars and Jupiter in our own solar system. The planet is depicted here with Jupiter-like atmospheric bands and three small moons. The existence of the planet is inferred from periodic 'wobbles' of the parent star which are detected using doppler techniques.
