Rotten Row, Hyde Park, London

Rotten Row, Knightsbridge, London is a wide bridle way running along the south side of Hyde Park from Hyde Park Corner although rarely used for this purpose today. In the 18th century this was the place to be seen; the dandies of the day parading on their horses and the ladies taking the air in fine carriages. The name is not unique, there being at least 15 other examples throughout the UK and has as many possible origins. The suggestions include corruptions of Route, or Rue, du Roi (French for King's Road), rotteran (to muster) or Ratten Row (a roundabout route). It may even have been descriptive of a row of tumble down rat infested cottages but this seems unlikely for the London example as Hyde Park is a Royal Park previously set aside for the monarch's pleasures.
