The French angelfish is found on both sides of the Atlantic, in the western Atlantic from the Bahamas and Florida to southeast Brazil. This species has been introduced into Bermuda. Juvenile French a«ngelfish strongly resemble juvenile Gray angelfish, the body black with yellow stripes (A); however, the juvenile French angelfish has a round black spot in the caudal fin (B) whereas, in the juvenile Gray angelfish, this spot is rectangular. The center yellow nose stripe on a juvenile French angelfish stops at the upper lip while it continues through the lower lip on a Grey angelfish juvenile.
