He deployed twice to Helmand Province, Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, where he specialized in rockets and demolition. In March 2010, less than 4-months into his second deployment, the 7-ton truck he was driving detonated an Improvised Explosive Device.

The NAVCON Brig in partnership with Carolina Canines for Service placed the prisoner-trained three and a half year-old black lab mix with Donchess, who is a wounded service member. In March 2010, less than 4-months into his second deployment, the 7-ton truck he was driving detonated an Improvised Explosive Device. He sustained numerous injuries and was awarded the Purple Heart. He is currently stationed in Jacksonville, NC. Ruth has been in the Carolina Canines for Service for approximately two years. CCFS is a non-profit health and human services organization that train service doges for people with disabilities. Through this program, military prisoners are taught to raise and train the service dogs that are provided to veterans with disabilities by Carolina Canines free of charge.
