Star trails. View of star trails seen through a natural rock arch. Star trails are formed on this long-exposure photograph as the rotation of the Earth causes the stars to appear to move around the sky, centred on the celestial poles. The brightest trail here is that of Polaris, the Pole Star (Alpha Ursae Minoris), in the constellation Ursa Minor. This sandstone arch has been formed by the weathering and erosion of natural weaknesses in the rock. Photographed in Arches National Park, Utah, USA.
