A French casket with a roof-shaped lid, 1st half of the 16th century. Rectangular oak casket with a ridged lid. The exterior is covered with red velvet threadbare down to the backing fabric, (shrinkage, minor defects), and fastened with numerous decorative brass nails. Iron hinge straps and hasps were made with ends shaped as stylized fleurs de lys. Remnants of fire-gilding. Original lock on the front with a beautifully curved escutcheon. Key missing.
