The diffusion of gases through liquids and allied experiments . variety, but the formshown in the annexed fig. 16 was finally vd is the Cartesian diver capable of rising inthe tube cmm, open below, closed above by thestoppered thermometer / and kept full of the bulb of this thermometer ser\es additionally as a stop for the diver on flotation. Thediver must fit very loosely in the tube, so thatthere may be a minimum of viscous resistance toits vertical motion. There should be at least clear space all around the diver. To preventit from sinking completely, a vertical sheet ofmica, e, slightly flexed so as to hold its position inan axial plane by reason of its elasticity, waseventually adopted in preference to wire wider and outer tube, yl, is so chosen that the area r of the mouth ofthe diver may be equal to that of the annular space without, as nearly aspossible, throughout. The gas in the space II above the free surface / ofthe liquid may be changed and kept at any pressure by aid of the tubesa and h. 55. Fig. 16.—Improved Car-tesian diver with doubletube and influx pipe. 56 THE DIFFUSION OF GASES THROUGH The tube gg is of use in charging the diver with gas. For this purposethe apparatus A is inverted and then brought back to the erect position inthe figure so that the diver may be completely filled with the liquid. Thegas in question is then introduced in small bubbles through gg, while thegas at H is kept about at the pressure (less than o. i atmosphere) at whichthe experiment is to begin. When the diver rises the tube gg is closed. Itmust subsequently be quite filled with the liquid by suction above, so thatthere may be no accidental leakage of air from g to v. In fact, the tube gmay with advantage be straight. Gas may be led into v by tipping theapparatus. Otherwise it escapes into H without charging the diver. Table 15. No. M A B 37425 C. E F H Bad-.
