And at this point hefound her, who thereon took a vowfor her to Madame Saint Katherine,and promised to bring his wife tothat saint, if Madame would restoreher, whole and well. So soon as hehad done his prayer, she openedher eyes and began to speak, andwas as well as ever she had straightway he led her to thesaid chapel, and there made she heroblation, and so departed, whole andwell. 56 II THE YEAR 1380. ATURDAY, vigil ofPentecost, one thou-sand three hundredand eighty, PerrotChapon, of the Pa-rish of Saint Salvator near Lu-zarche, came to the chapel to submithimself thankfully to Madame SaintKatherine, acknowledging the gracethat she won from him of Our Lord ;namely, the delivery of his body thatwas held of the English in chains ;and there was he for a whole monthin irons, nor no deliverance could hefind for himself. 8 57 Miracles of Saint Katherine So made he his vow to MadameSaint Katherine, that if he might es-cape without paying ransom, verilyhe would go on pilgrimage to herchapel. And no sooner was his vowmade in prison — his wife also mak-ing her vow about that same hour,—than he fell asleep, and on his wak-ing, lo, he was in the hall of his ownhouse, all in chains of iron as he so hath he come to the chapel,to give thanks to Our Lord, and tothe Virgin, and hath sworn thatthis is true. 68
