Milky Way. Optical image of the Milky Way as it passes through a region known as the Summer Triangle. The Summer Triangle is a large group of three bright stars visible in the Summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The stars are: Vega (in the constellation Lyra), lower right; Altair (in Aquila), to the right of the trees at lower left; and Deneb (in Cygnus), upper right. The Milky Way is a luminous band in the sky caused by the light of stars which are too numerous to be seen individually. They are numerous because they lie along the plane of our galaxy's disk. The darker area in the Milky Way (centre) is dust cloud which blocks some of the starlight.
