This typically Tuscan restaurant is housed in an historic former tavern in which diners can sit beside a pre-Roman Etruscan wall and can also book a table inside a magnificent cistern dating from the 1400s. The tavern, founded in the 17th century on the site of a chapel of San Pierino, was one of only four such hostelries in Volterra at the time (by the mid-19th century, there were up to 50). A section of the wall that once defended the ancient Etruscan city of Velathri supports the eastern end of the present structure, with its massive stones surmounted in the largest dining room by lighter medieval stonework. ‘La Pace’ has been run by the same Tuscan family since 1939.
