Antony Gormley's Another Place at Crosby Beach [Beach Bank, Crosby, Liverpool, Merseyside, England, Great Britain, UK, Europe]..

Another Place is a piece of modern sculpture by Antony Gormley. Antony Gormley OBE (born 30 August 1950) is an English sculptor. His best known works include the Angel of the North, a public sculpture in Gateshead commissioned in 1995 and erected in February 1998, and Another Place on Crosby Beach near Liverpool. Born the youngest of seven children, Gormley grew up in Hampstead later studying at Ampleforth College, Yorkshire. He also studied at Trinity College, Cambridge (1968-1971) before going to India and Sri Lanka to study Buddhism (1971-1974). From 1974 onwards, he attended various colleges in London, completing his studies with a postgraduate course in sculpture at the Slade School of Art, University College London (1977-1979). His career was given early support by Nicholas Serota who had been a near contemporary of Gormley's at Cambridge giving him a solo exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1981). Almost all of his work takes the human body as its subject, with his own body used in many works as the basis. Gormley won the Turner Prize in 1994 with Field for the British Isles. Now permanently erected on Crosby Beach in Liverpool, England, Another Place was due to be moved to New York, United States in November 2006, but there was a controversial proposal to retain the work at Crosby. It was recently stated in the local paper, the Crosby Herald, that they may stay for up to a decade, but at a meeting on March 7th 2007, Sefton Council accepted proposals allowing the sculptures to be kept permanently at Crosby Beach. The sculpture consists of 100 cast iron figures which face out to sea, spread over a 2 mile ( km) stretch of the beach. Each figure is 189 cm tall (nearly 6 feet 2½ inches) and weighs around 650 kg (over 1400 lb). In common with most of Gormley's work, the figures are cast replicas of the artist's own body. As the tides ebb and flow, the figures are revealed and submerged. This photograph is part of the Imagine Collection, hosted by Alamy.
