The Marquis Claude Jouffroy d'Abbans presenting his proposals for a steam-powered vessel to a meeting called by the Marquis Ducrest in the 1770's. Ducrest, a member of the French Academy of Sciences, called the meeting of a number fellow nobleman to evaluate the steamboat proposal by Jouffroy. This was supported by his fellow-inventors Joseph d'Auxiron and Charles Follenai who also attended. They were seeking financing and a 15 year exclusive concession to operate river steam navigation. Also at the meeting was the distinguished Parisian engineer Jacques Perier as a consultant. In his view the proposed steam engine was too powerful for the task and he persuaded Ducrest to reject Jouffroy's scheme. Nevertheless Jouffroy continued to work on his steamboat and went on to build the first successful steam-powered boat which he demonstrated on the river Saone at Lyon in 1783.
