He died infront of his bouse in Beacon-street, struck instantlydead by a stroke of apoplexy, aehe was getting intohis carriage to make an afternoon visit, on the 19tbof October, 1816. By this affecting event, this town[Boston) has lost an eminent merchant and excellentfitiren ; an only child, an affectionate parent; tliischurch [Trinity], a distinguished benefactor; societyat large, a well bred and hospitable gentleman. DKHCHIPTION OF THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND. 133. Tnip state, the smallest in theUnion, is 1)onnfled on the northand e;ist by Massachusetts, southby the Atlantic ocean, and west byConTiecticiit. It is about forty-nine miles lon(j and twenty-ninewide, and contains one thousandthree hundred and sixty squaremiles, of which one hundred andthirty are embraced in Narragan-set bay. The population in 1840was 108,830. The northern portion of thestate is hilly, and that near thecoast is low and level, but healthy, being tempered by the Seabreeze. There areseveral islamds in and near Narraganset bay, the principal of which, RhodeIsland (called after the isle of Rhodes in the Mediterranean), has given name tothe state. There are several riveis of great value for manufacturing, which is carried onin various branches, but chiefly in cotton, to the great benefit of the state. Theprincipal rivers are as follows : Pawtucket, Providence, Wood, Pawtuxet, andPawcatuck ; and several manufacturing
