Diabetic retinopathy after laser treatment. Ophthalmoscope view of the retina of the eye in a diabetic patient, after treatment by laser. The retina of this eye suffered severe retinopathy, with the development of a large number of blood vessels. Blood haemorrhages (at lower left) and tiny aneurysms (balloon-like swellings of blood vessels) caused a reduction in bloodflow. However, as seen here, a successful laser treatment has sealed blood vessels and has caused them to regress. Diabetic retinopathy describes the damage to the blood supply of the retina that occurs as a complication of diabetes. (see photo: M140/176 showing this retina before laser treatment).
