When the membrana tympani is transparent, the accumulationof serous or mucous exudation in the tympanic cavity, as I firstobserved and described,* can be distinguished by a peculiar appear-ance of the membrane. For the fluid can be seen through themembrane in the dependent portions of the tympanic cavity, itslevel being sharply defined from the air-filled portion of thetympanum by a line on the membrane.
