The young English painters of that day wereso anxious to crowd all they could into a little space inorder to have a better chance of being hung on the line,that they deemed it a sign of exceptional skill to arrangea group so that the heads nearly touched the top of thepicture and the feet stood on the lower edge of the frame,while the background was crowded into the intermediatespaces.
