Original Victorian era Carte de Visite ( visiting card or CDV) depicting celebrated London's West End theatre actress, Miss Winifred Emery, circa 1880's, London, Many people collected carte de visites of their favourite celebrities of the time, and put them in special albums.


Miss Winifred Emery, English actress, 1861-1924. She began as a child actress and during the 1880’s and 1890’s her career blossomed as she played many leading roles in London’s West End theatres. Her first London appearance was in 1874 in the pantomime,”Beauty and the Beast”. This photo was by Herbert Rose Barraud (24 August 1845 – 27 November 1896) who was a noted portrait photographer who had studios in London and Liverpool. Cartes de visite was introduced to England in 1857. In May 1860, Mayall took carte portraits of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children. These were published later that year and the popularity of carte portraits soared. People began to collect portraits of their family, friends and celebrities and mounting them in photograph albums. Celebrity cartes were sold at stationer’s shops in the same way that picture postcards are today. The craze for collecting celebrity cartes de visite in albums reached its peak during the 1860s, but the format remained popular until the beginning of the 20th century, and cartes can still be found in large numbers, loose or in family albums.
