Duke Ellington (1923-1974) 78 rpm Vocalion Swing Series record label “Show Boat Shuffle” recorded 30 Apr. 1935
Vocalion was founded in 1916 by the Aeolian Piano Company of New York City, which introduced a retail line of phonographs at the same time. The fledgling label first issued single-sided. vertical cut disc records, soon switching to double sided, then switching to the more common lateral cut system in 1920. The Vocalion label was discontinued in Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was an American composer, pianist and bandleader of a jazz orchestra. He led his orchestra from 1923 until his death in 1974, his career spanning over 50 years.
