Looking Westward Along Leven Beach To Methil Power Station Which Dominates The Skyline.

Methil Power Station is a 57 megawatt coal slurry-fired station which lies 1 km from the centre of Methil on the southern side of the mouth of the River Leven and on the shore of the Firth of Forth. Mothballed in 2000 and now awaiting demolition, it began operation in 1965 and was designed to run on coal-slurry and is one of only two stations of its type. As the mines forming the Fife Coalfield closed, waste coal which had accumulated in bings was used as fuel and Methil and Barony helped to clear much of the coal bings around Scotland. However, as the bings disappeared, operations ceased due to lack of fuel and uneconomical operation. Jack Vettriano was born in Methil and used Methil Power Station the backdrop in his painting "Long Time Gone".
