British physicist William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) invented a pioneering photographic method, later patenting the first negative-positive photographic process, the calotype. This image, taken in April 1844 at his home in Lacock, Wiltshire, UK, is a salted paper print from a calotype negative. It was published in 'The Pencil of Nature' (1844).
