This Crispinus, also called Anagothus,because of Gothic blood, derived through hismothers mother, was son of Grimaldus I, firstPrince of Monaco, by his wife Crispina,daughter of Rollo, Duke of Normandy. TheGentlemans Magazine, London, T832, PartI, pp. 26-30, has a full account of this part ofthe family, and derives Grimaldus, throughthe Dukes of Brabant, from the ancient Kingsof the Franks. No detailed history or pedigree of the fam-ily from William Crispin, Baron of Bee, at thetime of the Conquest, down to Capt. WilliamCrispin, founder of the American family, isknown to exist, though there may be someunpublished heralds visitations of Devonshire,or pedigrees in private possession, that wouldthrow much light on the subject. William Crispin undoubtedlybelonged. William Crispin appears to have been bornabout 1610. In the British Calendar of StatePapers, Domestic Series, the name of WilliamCrispin occurs several times between 1634 and1652, but it is only on the latter date that wecan positively identify the name as referringto the ancestor of our family. In that yearhe commanded at the Hope for the Com-monwealth ; the Hope was a certain portionof the harbor of Portsmouth, devoted to theuse of the navy, though, of course, it is pos-sible that there might have been also a vesselof that name.
