Eeichard, of the Lewis & Snow Seed Co., is the secretary and the object of the association is the betterment of the trade in general, espe- cial attention being given to the ques- tion of equitable state laws referring to the seed trade. Peas, sweet peas and lettuce will assuredly be short items this season, ac- cording to those in a position to know. Thos. Cox, the veteran seedsman of San Francisco, and who sold out to the C. C. Morse Seed Co. years ago, was a visitor this week. February 16 and still no sign of rain in this locality. H. E. E. STOCK SEED OF SWEET COBN. The structure of the floral organs of the corn plant is such as to secure under normal conditions more or less complete cross-fertilization, and it has been found that there is liability to rapid loss of vegetative vigor in plants which are persistently self-fertilized. This, in connection with the fact that it is difficult, if not impossible, under ordi- nary farm conditions to prevent more or less cross-pollination, leads to meth- ods and practices in growing stock seed corn which differ materially from those that give the best results with most vegetables. Instead of trying to isolate the stock blocks, it is suggested by W. W. Tracy, in a recent bulletin, that they be located near the center of the largest available field of the variety and that the selection of breeding stock be made as follows: First,
