Here was alarge cairn ; and among some loose stones which hadfallen from its top was found a tin case enclosing arecord which gave the first authentic information asto the fate of the lost expedition. This importantdocument was one of those blanks furnished to explor-ing ships by the British Admiralty for the purposeof being thrown overboard at sea in order to ascertainthe set of the current, etc., on which is printed in sixlanguages a request that the finder will note time andplace where it was found, and forward it to the.
