The grave in St Leonard's churchyard - with head, foot and body stones - of Lionel Lukin (1742-1834) who patented an unsinkable lifeboat ("unimmergible boat") in 1785. A Member of the Coachmakers Company in London, Lukin retired to Hythe in 1824. James Beeching (1788-1858) invented the first self-righting lifeboat, Lukin invented the first unsinkable boat. The grave foot marker is initialled L L.
