Epidural anaesthetic. Anaesthetist inserting a cannula into a patient's back, through which an epidural anaesthetic will be administered. An epidural anaesthetic is delivered to the epidural space (the space around the membranes that surround the spinal cord). It causes a loss of sensation and loss of pain in the lower half of the body. This patient is being anaesthetised prior to surgery.
