After some years of study at Hampden Academy he entered YaleCollege in 1819, at the age of 18 years, and graduated with honors in1823 ;? and after studying law for a number of years with Enoch Brown,in Hampden, and with John Godfrey, in Bangor, he was admitted topractice as an attorney of the Court of Common Pleas in June, 1826,and opened an oflice in Hampden Upper Corner. He enjoyed quitea large practice while located there, for at that time there was no directroad from Carmel and adjacent towns to Bangor, and the residents ofthese towns were compelled to go through Hampden to reach Bangor,and they would find it more convenient to transact their law business inHampden than to go five miles further to B
