Victor Emmanuel, King of Piedmont,accepted the sovereignty thus offered him, and on April2, i860, the first parliament of the enlarged kingdommet in Turin. A small state of less than 5,000,000 hadgrown to one of 11,000,000 within a year. This wasthe most important change in the political system ofEurope since 1815.
