BANGKOK, THAILAND: A pad thai vendor stands by her food cart as it rains on Khao San Road in Bangkok, Thailand on August 22nd, 2019. Bangkok's bustling Khao San Road - a strip famous among tourists for its budget hostels, street food and market stalls - is set for a £ face lift in October this year. For many backpackers Khao San is the starting point for their travels across Southeast Asia. It is a place to meet fellow travellers, dine out on pad thai served from street carts, sip cocktails from small brightly-coloured buckets or perhaps get an ill-advised tattoo. A place both garish and charming where young tourists in loosely fitting Thai elephant pants weave past street vendors offering anything from hair braiding to foot massages. The 400m strip is set to be redeveloped between October and February in order to turn it into a proper walking street, without traders encroaching on the pedestrian areas. The new plans drawn up by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) would see vendors allocated specific plots and set times in which they can ply their trade. Some are concerned that these plans, which include repaving the whole street, will kill Khao San's famous backpacker-ghetto character. Street vendors themselves have recently complained to the BMA about the plans, which would potentially cause five months of disruption to their trade during the height of Thailand’s coming tourist season.
