MEARNS, WILLIAM MELLIS : Surgeon, ; son of William Mearns, medical practi-tioner, Gateshead-on-T y n e ; born Gates-head-on-Tyne, 7December 1884 ; ma-triculated in Medicine,1902 ; , 1908. As a student Mearnsserved in the Uni-versity VolunteerCompany. He re-ceived a Commissionas Surgeon in theRoyal Navy, 6 , and served tillthe outbreak of war in China, the Persian Gulf,etc. He was appointed Medical Officer Formidable, August 1914, and servedwith the Home Fleet.
