Manchester, UK 17th August 2014 Maxine Peake takes part in a rally taking place on the site of the 1819 Peterloo Massacre to commemorate the event when soldiers and militiamen killed 20c and injured hundreds of the 60,000 ordinary people, who were protesting against poor working conditions and for parliamentary democracy. Their meeting was instrumental in the development of trades unions and in the vote being given to ordinary people. Today's rally is trying to heighten public awareness of the massacre and to encourage the local council to erect a permanent memorial on or near the site of the massacre.
