Jean-Henri Casimir Fabre (1823-1915), French naturalist, sitting at a desk with a book and specimen jars. Fabre was a teacher for most of his life, and it was only at the age of 50 that he could devote time to field studies in entomology. In 1878 he set up a small open-air laboratory on a plot of land in Provence. His work started on parasitic wasps, but extended to various insect groups. His writings eventually culminated in a ten-volume work, now considered a classic in the subject. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
