Knee arthroscopy. Surgeons performing arthroscopic removal of knee cartilage (meniscectomy). An arthroscope (bottom left), inserted through a narrow incision in the skin, provides them with an internal view of the joint. This is seen on the screen at upper centre. The menisci are the two pieces of cartilage that lie between the bones in the joint, providing a smooth surface for movement. Meniscectomy is performed when the cartilage has torn or is diseased, causing pain and decreased joint mobility.
