This seems to be a well marked subspecies. I have examined specimens fromColumbus, Wauseon, Oberlin, etc., all clearly referable to this type. This is the bird of the northern interior of British America. Its winter rangeoverlaps that of 0. alpestris, tho lying mostly to the westward. Large winterflocks often contain both forms in about equal proportions. Average measurements of 15 males: wing (); tail ();exposed culmen .45 () : tarsus .88 () : middle toe .49 ( ) (Oberholser).. Recognition Marks.—Sparrow size; terrestrial; conspicuous black or black-ish markings about head. Black crown patch produced into feather-tufts orhorns pointing backward.
