SEPARATING THE SEED FROM THE WASTE MATERIAL. The wet mass of seeds and skins as it comes from the pulp- ing operations is known as "cyclone waste,"2 and several methods may be em- ployed for separating the seeds from this waste. The common practice where only small quantities of seed intended for planting purposes are involved consists in suspending the waste in several volumes of water and agitating the mass. The skins, being lighter than the seed, have a tendency to float, while the seeds and cores sink. In large-scale operations3 the waste is discharged into a long trough provided with a false bottom, the mesh of which is of a size which 2 So called from the name of the pulping machine. 3 Huelsen [W.
